Scope: Excavation and construction of concrete stairs
Location: Bonnet Bay
Project Length: 3 weeks
Our team was called in to deliver a project in Bonnet Bay that most contractors wouldn’t touch. Our goal was to create a safe, practical, and visually appealing concrete stairway up a steep and challenging block.
The owners needed a long-term solution for safe access from street level to the front door. Their elderly parents were struggling with the steep driveway, making accessing their home very difficult. Wet weather also made it slippery and unsafe. Adding concrete stairs would not only solve the access problem but also add value to the property, something the owners’ real estate agent had already pointed out.
The Project Brief
We were engaged to:
- Excavate, form, and pour concrete stairs from street level to the front door
- Widen the driveway for easier access
- Install a painted timber and yacht wire handrail for safety and style
- Coordinate garden lighting installation with Old Mate Electrical Group
- Coordinate painting works with I Paint Sydney
Overcoming the Terrain Challenges
This project was no small feat. Seven other contractors inspected the site but either declined to quote or deemed the build too complex.
Some stairs were found on solid rock, meaning large sections had to be hammered out. The steep terrain added another layer of difficulty, requiring careful planning to ensure safety and stability. To anchor the structure securely, we installed concrete piers into the side of the hill, providing a solid foundation and preventing any risk of the stairs shifting or sliding over time.
Our combination of skilled operators, specialist excavation equipment, and local site knowledge meant we could confidently take on the job and deliver it to a high standard.
From Excavation to Finishing Touches
The project took three weeks from start to finish. Our process for constructing concrete stairs included:
- Site excavation to remove rock and prepare the stairway foundation
- Structural reinforcement with concrete piers installed into the hill for long-term stability
- Concrete works to pour and finish coloured concrete for durability and visual appeal
- Handrail installation using painted timber and yacht wire to complement the home’s style
- Lighting and painting coordinated with trusted trades to achieve a seamless, high-quality finish
The Result
The new concrete staircase is safe, sturdy, and attractive, allowing the owners, their parents, and visitors to access the home with ease. The project solved a functional issue and created a value-adding feature that will benefit the property for years to come.
