We recently had the pleasure of transforming the outdoor space at Tennyson Cottage—a private home tucked away in the Blue Mountains suburb of Tennyson.
This multi-stage project showcased not only our skill in structural landscaping but also our team’s ability to navigate challenging site conditions with care and professionalism.
The Project: Retaining Wall & Custom Entrance Upgrade
The client initially engaged us to remove and replace an ageing 35m concrete retaining wall with a fresh sandstone log wall that would better complement the surrounding environment. From there, the project evolved to include a hardwood and sandstone entrance fence, complete with sandstone pillars, ironbark rails, a custom property sign, and automatic lighting.
The work was delivered in two key stages:
- Stage 1: Demolition and excavation, followed by the supply and construction of a new sandstone log retaining wall with drainage and clean site removal.
- Stage 2: Fabrication and installation of a hardwood/sandstone front fence, complete with custom signage and lighting.
Challenges We Navigated On-Site
Delivering a sandstone retaining wall on a private residential block often comes with hidden challenges—and this one was no exception.
- Tight access: Located at the end of a narrow private road, all sandstone logs had to be transferred three at a time from a semi-trailer to our 3t tipper for delivery to the site.
- Proximity to the home: Excavation and log placement occurred very close to the house. This required a spotter on-site at all times and our most experienced operators to manage the machinery safely.
- Rock removal: While excavating, we encountered solid sandstone below ground level and had to carefully remove approximately 10 tonnes.
- Surface protection: The client’s bitumen driveway was at risk of damage from machinery, so we laid down rubber track mats at the start of each day and packed them away at the end—ensuring zero impact.
The Final Result: Natural, Strong & Stylish Retaining Wall
The transformation speaks for itself. The sandstone retaining wall now provides both structural support and visual appeal, framing the home beautifully while offering long-term erosion protection. The custom entrance fence—with its mix of timber and stone—adds a warm, welcoming feel and truly sets the tone for the property.
At night, discreetly installed lighting highlights the sandstone pillars, creating a subtle glow and enhancing curb appeal.
